“If the youth of our time are not willing to marry, then it’s because those who have taken the lead are not giving them a good example”
The metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer Buckle said this at a mass wedding held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Kaneshie as part of her 50th anniversary celebration.
The occasion coincided with the 50th Birthday of the Parish Priest Rev Fr. Johannes Mintah Mensah as well as His Grace’s 39th priestly ordination celebration.
In his sermon, His Grace reiterated that there is no divorce in the Catholic Church not because the church says so but because the Bible says so. And that was why he chose the Gospel reading from Matthew 19:3-4. He also said that he doesn’t see why anybody will want to marry only for a while.
He said, marriage is a vocation; a calling from God just as the priesthood. He also said that God has a mission for each person in their vocation.
He also said that marriage is a mystery (of God) and proceeded to explain what makes marriage a mystery.
1. Genesis 2:18 “And Jehovah Elohim said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmate, his like.” He said “God made for Adam a helpmate, not a mating help” He advised the congregation to ponder on this passage.
2. God brought the woman to the man after creating her from the rib of the man. For this reason, the woman you are married to was brought to you by God because she is what you deserve. God cannot make a mistake.
3. Gen 1:26-28. The lord God blessed them after creating them. God blessed them because He was sending them to work with Him in order to fulfill His work. He made them Pro creators.
He said that fruitful as used in the scripture does not only refer to the fruit of the womb. God created man and woman as potential.
The man plays god to the woman and vice versa. No man or woman is perfect, something we all know. “If you want a perfect man or woman then you should marry a tree or a wall.” But God who is perfect will give us strength to tolerate each other.
In marriage, parents are gods to their children.
He also said that, if someone is an armed robber, the parents should be arrested first. He quoted an adage in Ga which translates a crab does not give birth to a bird.
4. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands and wives must love and submit each other respectively, seeing each other as God and not man or woman.
To conclude his sermon he gave the couples a homework that will keep their marriages together. He said, a family that prays together, stays together therefore each couple should always pray together.
In all, sixteen (16) couples were joined together in Holy Matrimony.
His Grace also unveiled the statue of St. Theresa and blessed the Our Lady of Good Counsel Grotto.
The celebration ended with a dinner with all 16 couples, the Bishop and some priests.
Congratulations to our newlyweds.
